I served In the 9th Infantry Division as a Non-Commissioned Officer, in Vietnam in 1969,  and that division operated in what was called the Delta Region of Vietnam, which is the area of the Mekong Delta that runs around Saigon and up into Cambodia, and It's in the southern part of south Vietnam. I was a squad leader and on March 23rd 1969, during an ambush I was hit with a grenade, and ended up losing my leg above the knee. And that is in fact how I got involved with Disabled Sports USA, which had begun in 67' as an organization to help wounded and disabled veterans of Vietnam get back into life through sports. It was run by some Vietnam veterans and some World War II 10th Mountain Division veterans. Which the 10th mountain division was the famous skiing division that Senator Bob Dole served in. And they were the group that freed Italy from the Axis Powers in WWII. And so it was natural that the first sport that was offered by Disabled Sports USA was skiing, since the 10th mountain division that was what they knew- they knew how to teach skiing. And so my first lesson, if you will, as an amputee, to adapt to sports was skiing on December 31st 1969. So about 6 months, 7 months after my injury I was able to get back, or start to get back into active life through sports.
